Born in 1944, in Cape Town, South Africa and raised in Zimbabwe, Mike Smith began his pursuit of art before he can even remember. As he developed his inherit skills in drawing, he initially studied in the architectural field, which he would soon abandon to focus primarily on his affection for art and would pursue a career in Creative Art Direction in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Though predominately self-taught, Mike would later become enrolled at the Salisbury School of Art. Closely following his academic stint, Mike started in-depth studies under the UK artist Micheal Chase, in congruence at this time, he began to expand his Creative Art Directorial skills on an international level in North America. Where eventually he and his wife Lyn would moved to Toronto and continue in their respective fields. It was in 2003 When Mike and Lyn decided to dedicate their time exclusively to their true calling. Yearning for a more expansive setting, Mike and Lyn decided to move out of the current urban backdrop and move to the nearby Northumberland County. Where Mike and Lyn carved out a cozy studio, where they can wile the time away working away on the things they love most.
Inspired by the skies of Africa, the trees of Provence, and the farms of Ontario, my work consists of a series of contemporary abstracted and stylized landscapes in charcoal and oil on canvas. Colors are saturated, shapes flattened, contrast is exaggerated.
The goal is to capture just some of the sense of time and space that exists outside of a city
